Puan Urges Indonesians to Retain Citizenship Amidst High Relinquishment Rate

House of Representatives (DPR) Chairwoman Puan Maharani highlighted information regarding the large number of Indonesian citizens (WNI) who have relinquished their citizenship status. She encouraged Indonesians to maintain their WNI status. "We hope that no Indonesian citizen will change their nationality," said Puan at the DPR building, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, July 21. As is known, the phenomenon of Indonesian citizens releasing their citizenship status is currently a public concern. This follows the data that there are 8,000 Indonesian citizens who choose to release their Indonesian citizen status in the last 5 years. In the midst of the news, the government issued a new regulation regarding the increase in the administrative fee for the application for the release of citizenship status worth Rp. 5 million. The policy of imposing a tariff of IDR 5 million for Indonesian citizens (WNI) who apply for the release of Indonesian citizenship status to the President is regulated in Government Regulation (PP) Number 30 of 2026 concerning Types and Tariffs for Types of Non-Tax State Revenues (PNBP) applicable to the Ministry of Law. Actually, this rule already existed before, but the new policy increased the 5-fold rate of losing citizenship from the original only Rp. 1 million. Even though there is an increase in the administration tariff, there are still many Indonesian citizens who apply for the release of citizenship status. The latest data, there are currently 300 people who want to revoke the status of Indonesian citizens even though the administration tariff fee has increased. Regarding this, Puan hopes that all Indonesian citizens will maintain their Indonesian citizenship status. "Hopefully all Indonesian citizens will continue to love Indonesia," said Puan.
