Bali Truck Driver Set on Fire by Boss Dies After Week-Long Battle for Life

I Gede Selamet (21), a truck driver in Bali who was set on fire by his employer, has died after a week of intensive medical treatment. The incident, which occurred on Friday (25/9/2026) at RSUP Prof Ngoerah Hospital in Denpasar, has sent shockwaves through the local community. Selamet, originally from Muncan Village in Karangasem, Bali, succumbed to his injuries. His village head, I Wayan Tunas, confirmed the death, stating that the family is currently deliberating on the repatriation of the body, as religious ceremonies are ongoing in Muncan Village. The timing of the funeral will depend on the family's decision and the completion of these rituals. The tragedy has not only brought immense grief to Selamet's family but also highlighted the severe financial burden of medical expenses. As a victim of a violent crime, Selamet's treatment costs were not covered by BPJS Kesehatan, the national health insurance. By Thursday (24/9), the medical bills had reached Rp88 million, with donations from volunteers and the public totaling only around Rp35 million. In response to the dire situation, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka reportedly provided a donation of Rp25 million, directly transferred to the hospital to aid in covering the victim's medical expenses. The arson attack took place on Friday (18/9) of the previous week. The perpetrator, identified as the victim's employer, I Putu Cahyadi Putra (37), allegedly set Selamet ablaze inside his room following a dispute over money. Selamet suffered burns covering 68 percent of his body and fought for his life for a week before passing away. Authorities acted swiftly following the incident, apprehending Cahyadi Putra.
