Vietnam's Top Leader Discusses Investment, Cooperation in US
Vietnam's Party General Secretary and President met with leaders of major US corporations during his visit to the United States, discussing investment and cooperation. The engagements, alongside his attendance at the UN General Assembly, underscored Vietnam's international role and independent foreign policy.
General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and President To Lam met with leaders of three major US groups – Warburg Pincus, Boeing and Apple – in New York on the afternoon of September 21 (local time), discussing investment, aviation and technology cooperation. General Secretary and President To Lam stressed that Vietnam always welcomes and values all contributions, whether made directly or from afar. Joining hands to contribute to the homeland, he said, embodies the spirit of “shared national roots and compatriot solidarity”. The meeting was part of his trip to attend the High-Level General Debate of the 81st UN General Assembly and conduct bilateral activities in the US. During his stay, To Lam also met with Vietnamese experts and intellectuals in the US for exchanges. The trip is of strategic significance in reaffirming Vietnam’s foreign policy of independence and self-reliance, as well as its growing role on the international stage, international scholars say. The trip will not only help deepen the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership but also highlight Vietnam’s constructive role and responsible contributions to addressing global security and development challenges, they noted. Meanwhile, Vietnam continues its participation in UN peacekeeping operations, with Level-2 Field Hospital Rotation 8 and Engineering Unit Rotation 5 departing for UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and Abyei. This demonstrates Vietnam's projection of an image as a peace-loving and responsible country, ready to make greater contributions to the UN’s common endeavors. Furthermore, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) will host the 59th Executive Board Meeting of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) in Vietnam in 2027, marking its contribution to strengthening cooperation among news agencies in the digital media era. Vietnam can offer valuable lessons for efforts to foster trust and enhance the effectiveness of multilateralism, leveraging its experience in combining economic growth with social progress and environmental protection, said Kanni Wignaraja, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific at the UNDP. This suggests Vietnam aims for broader contributions beyond economic growth on the international stage.
