Cambodia Introduces 500,000 Shrimp Fry to Foster Marine Aquaculture in Preah Sihanouk

In Preah Sihanouk Province, Cambodia, 500,000 shrimp and crab fry have been introduced into the sixth pond at the Marine Aquaculture Skills Dissemination Center in Prey Nob District. This initiative is part of efforts to increase income for coastal communities and reduce reliance on imports, with expectations to invigorate the local economy. According to Nen Chamroeun, Director of the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, the Marine Aquaculture Skills Dissemination Center, located in Samrong Village, Samrong Commune, Prey Nob District, cultivates shrimp and crab on a 16-hectare site. Five ponds are currently operational, and preparations are underway to introduce 500,000 shrimp and crab fry into the sixth pond, which spans 5.5 hectares. Director Chamroeun stated that the results from the first pond have been positive, with the shrimp and crabs raised there possessing high quality comparable to those caught by fishermen from the sea. Consumer interest is also growing. While supply has not yet met demand due to the nascent stage of the operation, stable supply to the domestic market is anticipated in the future. He urged residents of Prey Nob District to actively participate in shrimp and crab farming, emphasizing that this would help meet domestic demand and reduce imports from neighboring countries. The shrimp and crabs farmed in this region are noted for their superior taste compared to imported varieties. The establishment of this marine aquaculture center has received strong support from provincial authorities, including the Governor of Preah Sihanouk Province, as well as government working groups and the Ministry of Agriculture. Governor Mang Sineth, in particular, has provided significant moral, material, and financial backing for the center's operations. The primary objectives of the center are to enhance the economic efficiency of marine aquaculture, increase income for coastal communities, and facilitate research, development, and dissemination of new techniques. Currently, over 20 families in Prey Nob District are engaged in shrimp and crab farming across more than 200 hectares.
