Vietnam's Top Leader Begins State Visit to Canada

General Secretary and President To Lam has commenced a state visit to Canada, aiming to open a new chapter in Vietnam–Canada relations. Prior to the visit, the top leader voiced his hope that the trip will reflect a new level of political trust, increasingly close alignment of interests and visions, and the determination of both countries to build a long-term, stable, and substantive relationship, serving as a model of cooperation between two nations on opposite sides of the Pacific Ocean. The state visit is expected to drive more substantive and closer ties between Vietnam and Canada. Trade relations between the two countries are moving towards value-chain integration, with a focus on deepening economic cooperation. Under its one-party system, Vietnam has achieved rapid economic growth and seeks to expand its influence by strengthening ties with the international community. In particular, amidst a complex relationship with China, enhancing relations with Western countries like Canada is seen as part of Vietnam's strategy for diplomatic diversification. Canada is an important partner for Vietnam, and the two countries have built cooperative relationships in various fields, including economy, security, and culture. This visit is anticipated to further strengthen these collaborations and explore new opportunities for cooperation.
