Ilocos Norte: Loyalty in the Marcoses’ ‘political project’ is not blind

Ilocos Norte, the home province of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., continues to be a stronghold of the Marcos family, with their political influence deeply entrenched across generations. In the upcoming 2025 elections, key positions such as governor, vice governor, and congressional seats are slated to be held by Marcos relatives, reflecting their sustained dominance. The Marcos family has cultivated this province as a "political project" over many years. During the late Ferdinand Marcos Sr.'s regime, contributions like land and livestock distribution, and the establishment of universities and hospitals, improved access to education and healthcare for residents, reducing migration to Manila. These tangible developments have fostered a perception of the Marcoses being synonymous with progress, forming the bedrock of their current support. Political observers argue that characterizing the support in Ilocos Norte as mere "blind loyalty" is an oversimplification. Sociologists suggest that it stems from a "Loyalist Mentality," a deep-seated regional loyalty and collective identity that resonates emotionally with voters beyond material gains. For many Ilocanos, supporting the Marcoses is seen as a marker of their identity, while criticism can be perceived as betrayal within their community. Historically, Marcos family members have championed legislation for the province's infrastructure development, special economic zones, and tourism promotion. Currently, as president, Marcos Jr. continues to provide aid to farmers and fisherfolk and supports recovery efforts from natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.
