Cambodian Customs authorities have apprehended a sand dredger that was illegally brought into Cambodian territory from Vietnam. According to Mr. Preab Karrat, Deputy Director of the Department of Prevention and Suppression of Smuggling of the General Department of Customs and Excise of Cambodia, who led the operation, the action was carried out under the orders of Mr. Kun Nhem, Secretary of State of the Prime Minister and Director General of the General Department of Customs and Excise, and the guidance of Mr. Nou Sitha, Director of the Department of Prevention and Suppression of Smuggling. Mr. Karrat stated that the specialized customs force, in cooperation with the K'aoh Roka Immigration Police, the Prey Veng Provincial Gendarmerie, and the National Gendarmerie, and under the coordination of the Prosecutor of the Provincial Court of Prey Veng, intercepted the sand dredger, marked HN-2607, approximately 5 kilometers from the K'aoh Roka-K'om Som bilateral checkpoint. The vessel was en route to the Koh Theung area in Peam Chor district, Prey Veng province, during the night of July 10th to 11th, 2026. Mr. Karrat confirmed that the dredger's captain, Nguyen Van Thanh, a 44-year-old Vietnamese national, confessed to operating the vessel from Vietnam into Cambodia without fulfilling legal import procedures. Following the inspection, authorities decided to temporarily impound the dredger and build a case file to be forwarded to the General Department of Customs and Excise for further legal proceedings.
