The National Unity Government (NUG) sent a message today (August 8) to the 38th anniversary ceremony of the 8888 Uprising. The message urges to overcome the enemy's divisive tactics and political maneuvers with the strength of unity and political awareness, as the end of the authoritarian regime may be more arduous. The NUG also stated that the political awakening sown by the uprising among the people of Myanmar is being passed on, and resistance against the injustices of authoritarians continues up to the Spring Revolution. It is stated that "eradication of the authoritarian regime and achievement of democracy" is the spirit of 8888. Furthermore, the NUG pointed out that it is extremely important to always remember and pay homage to the heroes who sacrificed their lives, blood, and sweat, and to firmly build complete unity. The National Unity Government has pledged to continue fighting alongside its ethnic brothers and allies to build a new federal democratic union that can guarantee justice, freedom, and genuine equality among ethnic groups, learning lessons from the mistakes of past history.
