Vietnamese Teacher Explores Europe for 19 Days on $4,000, Leverages AI for Efficiency

Bui Tran Hai Long, a 30-year-old English teacher from Hanoi, has successfully realized his dream of exploring Europe with a meticulously planned 19-day trip to Italy and France, costing approximately 100 million VND (around $4,000). This journey marks his third continent visited as part of his ambition to set foot on all five continents before turning 35. Long opted for a self-guided tour for his group of three, aiming to maximize their experience while optimizing costs. To achieve this, the group prioritized public transportation, shared accommodation in hostels, and timed their departure for early June, just after the peak European tourist season. This strategy allowed them to secure more affordable services. Two months prior to departure, Long focused on preparing a transparent visa application. Recognizing Italy as a country with stringent visa requirements, he dedicated significant time to researching regulations. "Transparency about my job and logic in the itinerary were the two prerequisite factors," Long stated. He emphasized the importance of a detailed explanatory plan. "I clearly outlined each leg of the journey, the transportation used, and even the estimated arrival times. This thorough preparation gave me confidence when submitting my application at VFS Global," he said. VFS Global is a specialized visa application service provider for governments and citizens, headquartered in Switzerland and the UAE. According to diplomatic sources, Schengen Area countries place a high value on the authenticity of travel itineraries and the financial capacity of tourists to ensure compliance with entry regulations. During the itinerary planning phase, Long leveraged AI assistance. He posed detailed questions ranging from bus route codes and local delicacies to train ticket purchasing procedures. This technological support ensured he felt prepared despite it being his first visit to Europe. In addition to submitting all required documents such as flight tickets and travel insurance, Long advised Vietnamese travelers to carry sufficient cash and to use un-notarized translations (only for Vietnamese documents). The visa result was received on the 12th working day, within the typical 14-day processing period. Among the six destinations—Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, Dolomites, Lake Como in Italy, and the French Riviera—the Dolomites left the most profound impression on Long. He described it as "an Italy I had never seen online," captivated by the serene beauty of Lake Braies reflecting the majestic snow-capped mountains. The Dolomites, located in the eastern Alps of northern Italy, are bordered by the Isarco, Pusteria, Piave, Brenta, and Adige valleys. The region boasts 18 peaks over 3,000 meters and more than 40 glaciers. Historically, lower slopes were forested, but now only small patches remain interspersed with meadows, according to Encyclopædia Britannica. Despite hearing about instances of petty theft, Long remained fortunate, avoiding any incidents due to his careful preparations. He used two types of bags when out and about: a crossbody camera bag worn in front, containing a secure compartment for his passport and cash, and a larger bag for less critical items like power banks and tripods. "Self-guided travel is a way to step out of your comfort zone. Don't let the fear of crime prevent you from experiencing the beauty of the world," Long advised. He also recommended packing light for flexibility and to avoid becoming an easy target for pickpockets in crowded areas. When sharing his trip online, many expressed surprise at the "unusually low" cost. Long explained his cost-saving measures included using public transport within Europe, staying in hostels, and traveling just before the peak season. Long began his solo international travel in 2023, with his first destination being Beijing, China. Subsequent travels included Xinjiang, Hong Kong (China), Thailand, Japan, and Egypt. When asked why he chose France and Italy as his first European destinations, he replied, "It’s like going to China and having to visit Beijing. When I think of Europe, I immediately think of France and Italy." Currently, Long is planning to "spend Christmas somewhere far away" and hopes to visit a new continent in 2027.
