Vietnam, Canada Seek to Advance Comprehensive Cooperation

Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung stressed that Vietnam attaches importance to its relations with Canada and stands ready to work with the latter to step up substantive cooperation towards the early elevation of the Vietnam–Canada Comprehensive Partnership, in line with the political trust, cooperation potential and interests of the two countries’ peoples. CVSE Chairman Assoc. Prof. Vu Viet Hung said that the convergence of Canada’s technological firepower and Vietnam’s development needs could open the door for highly practical joint projects. Affirming that Vietnam always attaches importance to its Comprehensive Partnership with Canada, Trung welcomed Canada’s strategic orientations towards the Indo-Pacific, including its support for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)'s centrality and its recognition of Vietnam’s role as a gateway for trade with the region. The article also touches upon various economic activities within Vietnam. For instance, a significant investment in a TikTok-related project in Ho Chi Minh City with a registered capital of VND25.85 trillion (USD980 million) is noted. Honda Vietnam reported a slight decrease of 0.2% in motorcycle sales for the first five months of its 2026-2027 fiscal year. The State Bank of Vietnam set the daily reference exchange rate at VND25,591 per USD on September 10, a marginal decrease from the previous day. Furthermore, import figures for meat and meat products showed a substantial increase of 26.3% in the January-August period compared to the same period last year. Retail markets for items like lanterns and toys are reportedly vibrant, meeting consumer demand. International economic relations are also highlighted. Vietnam and India aim to raise bilateral trade to USD25 billion by 2030. Bilateral trade between Vietnam and Russia reached USD3.24 billion in the first seven months of 2026, with exports totaling USD1.33 billion and imports USD1.91 billion. Chinese investors have backed 35 projects in Can Tho with nearly USD1.2 billion in registered capital. Regarding sustainable development, Ho Chi Minh City is advancing smart and green port development, promoting clean energy, lower emissions, and sustainable supply chains. Over the past five years, Vietnam has developed and implemented a green finance system to support low-emission and environmentally friendly production, with several banks introducing green credit packages for relevant projects. These economic and development trends are seen as part of Vietnam's planned economic growth strategy under its one-party system and its foreign policy of deepening international cooperation. While economic ties with China remain significant, Vietnam appears to be diversifying its economic relationships with countries like Canada, India, and Russia to mitigate risks and expand growth opportunities.
