Cambodia's Ministry of Education Discusses Teacher Training Enhancement with Pearson PLC
Cambodia's Ministry of Education discussed a project to enhance teacher training in STEM and English with the UK's Pearson PLC. The collaboration with Pearson, known for its digital education solutions and international curricula, is part of the government's reform efforts to improve educational quality.
Cambodia's Ministry of Education has held discussions with Pearson PLC, an education services company headquartered in the United Kingdom, regarding a cooperative project aimed at enhancing teacher training. The meeting took place in Phnom Penh on September 10, 2026. Mr. David Lyons, Vice President for the Asia-Pacific region at Pearson PLC, briefed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sport, Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, about Pearson's expansion into the education sector since the late 1990s. He highlighted the company's vision and mission to help everyone achieve their full potential through learning, offering digital education solutions, international-standard curricula, assessments, and lifelong learning programs. Lyons proposed cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport on teacher training for STEM subjects and the English language. He emphasized a comprehensive approach to support the transformation of English language education, build teacher capacity, and foster professional development to improve teaching quality and student learning outcomes. In response, Dr. Hang Chuon Naron expressed gratitude to Pearson PLC for their interest in promoting STEM and English education in Cambodia. He outlined the progress in 21st-century teacher training, focusing on technological skills, research, foreign languages, curriculum modernization, improvements to core textbooks, and the use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) to aid learning and teaching. Furthermore, the Minister highlighted the Cambodian government's efforts, through the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, to improve the teacher training system, which is central to educational reform and the overall school reform. This includes fostering domestic and international partnerships to strengthen teacher capacity, promote the adoption of new teaching methodologies, and share best practices in learning and teaching to elevate student academic results and educational quality to regional and international standards.
