Nwan River embankment breach causes flooding in five wards and 106 villages in Hlaymyar until August 5

It is reported that flooding has occurred in five wards within Hlaymyar town and 106 villages due to the breach of the Nwan River embankment until August 5. The breach of the Nwan River embankment occurred on the night of July 30 in Hlaymyar Township, Ayeyarwady Region, due to heavy rainfall and erosion by the river's water. As a result, as of August 5, water has entered five wards within Hlaymyar town, major roads within the town, 72 surrounding villages, 26 villages in Hinthada Township, six villages in Hlegu Township, and two villages in Kyonpyaw Township, totaling 106 villages. Due to the flooding caused by the breach of the Nwan embankment, 13 flood relief camps have been opened. Soldiers from the Southwest Command, members of the Myanmar Police Force, members of the Fire Brigade, social rescue organizations, philanthropic organizations, and local ethnic people are collectively engaged in search and rescue operations for flood-affected citizens, assisting in moving belongings to safe locations, delivering food supplies, and providing necessary healthcare services. Furthermore, to prevent erosion and collapse caused by the river's water, efforts such as placing sandbags, controlling water flow, and replenishing soil on the embankment are continuously being carried out. According to information collected up to the afternoon of August 4, it has been reported by the Information and Public Relations Bureau of the President's Office that over 30,000 people in Hlaymyar Township have been affected by the flood due to the damage to the Nwan embankment. According to the announcement from the Information and Public Relations Bureau of the President's Office, as of the afternoon of August 4, five wards, 106 villages, 7,734 houses, 7,858 households, and 32,607 people in Hlaymyar Township have been affected by the flood. In such a situation, assistance such as providing rice and basic food supplies and healthcare services to the flood-affected citizens is continuing to be provided. To prevent floodwaters from overflowing, measures such as driving piles on the right and left banks of the weir to prevent erosion, monitoring water flow and depth, and driving piles to block water channels are being carried out, according to the Information and Public Relations Bureau of the President's Office. According to measurements taken at 6 PM on August 4, the water level of the Nwan River at Hlaymyar town has decreased by approximately 2.4 inches, according to the announcement from the Information and Public Relations Bureau of the President's Office. Furthermore, it was stated in the announcement that a total of 1,088 gallons of gasoline and 402.5 gallons of diesel fuel had been distributed free of charge to rescue teams as of August 4.
