Cambodia to Serve as Vice-Chair of UN LDC Group

Cambodia has been endorsed to serve as vice-chair of the Bureau of the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Group for a three-year term from September 2026 to September 2029, officials said Wednesday. The decision was made at an ambassadorial meeting of the LDC Group at United Nations headquarters in New York. Keo Chhea, Cambodia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, welcomed the endorsement and thanked members for their confidence. He also expressed appreciation for Nepal’s leadership during its chairmanship and pledged close cooperation with Gambia, which will serve as chair, and other members of the incoming Bureau. Chhea said Cambodia would work to strengthen the collective voice of LDCs and advance their common priorities, including preparations for the mid-term review of the Doha Programme of Action (DPoA) scheduled for March 2027 in Doha. The DPoA provides a framework for international support to LDCs, aiming to address structural challenges, bolster resilience and promote sustainable development. Cambodia’s appointment comes as the country continues to engage actively in global discussions on development and the transition of nations graduating from the LDC category. As vice-chair, it will help represent the shared interests of LDCs in UN deliberations and contribute to advancing their development agenda.
