Cambodia Promotes Jatropa Investment in Kratie Province for Job Creation and Environmental Protection

Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen expressed his support for investments in planting jatropa (bird soapberry) and other crops in Kratie province on the morning of Monday, June 6, 2026. This initiative aims to transform barren land into economic benefits and job opportunities for the local population. During a meeting with provincial, municipal, district, commune, and departmental leaders in Kratie province, Hun Sen recalled the implementation of a series of reform programs in the province, including land tenure distribution for citizens to cultivate and economic reforms. He expressed satisfaction with the progress in agriculture and agro-industry in this northeastern province, reflecting the correctness of past policies and vision. Speaking about agricultural and agro-industrial development, Hun Sen also voiced his support for the investment in planting jatropa in Sambor district, Kratie province, by Holy Plantation Company. He stated that this investment has transformed barren land into benefits for the economy and employment for the people in remote rural areas. He also noted that the growth of these trees contributes to environmental protection. To transform barren land into new economic energy for rural areas, the Cambodian government has granted nearly 30,000 hectares of land from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' forest restoration station in Sambor district, Kratie province, and Siem Bok district, Stung Treng province, to Holy Plantation Company for planting jatropa. The company began planting jatropa in 2019 and has so far planted on a total area of 13,000 hectares. The jatropa trees have grown well and are being harvested for processing into plywood and some furniture. Holy Plantation Company is also expanding its planting to areas in Siem Bok district, Stung Treng province. Through this investment, the company provides regular employment for residents in Boeung Char commune, Sambor district, and from other areas, through activities such as planting, caring for, and harvesting jatropa, as well as working in wood processing factories. The jobs in the jatropa plantations, which are the first large-scale planted forests in Cambodia, provide regular income and have significantly improved the livelihoods of people in the area. In addition to providing jobs and income, the company, through this investment, has also contributed to the construction of roads and bridges, making it easier for residents to travel and transport agricultural products.
