Kampot Province has initiated the construction of solar-powered streetlights. The project covers the stretch of National Road No. 5 from the border of Chhuk Khum (Roly B'ear District) to the border of Ta Ches Khum (Kampot Tralach District). Governor Sun Sunnarith, accompanied by local authorities, specialized departments, and technicians from Electricité du Cambodge, inspected the construction site. Governor Sun Sunnarith stated that the installation of these solar streetlights is part of the Cambodian government's plan to deploy such lighting nationwide. This new initiative in Kampot Province is expected to reduce nighttime traffic accidents, enhance social safety, and boost the night economy and tourism. Furthermore, it offers advantages such as eliminating monthly electricity costs and easier installation compared to previous cable-based lighting systems. According to the governor, the maintenance of this infrastructure will be handed over from the Ministry of Mines and Energy and Electricité du Cambodge to the provincial Department of Public Works and Transport for continued operation. Provincial authorities plan to expand the installation not only along National Road No. 5 but also in populated areas along concrete roads and in various communes within the provincial city. During the occasion, the governor urged all local authorities and citizens to cooperate in maintaining the infrastructure after its completion. This will ensure the continuous illumination of the streetlights, contributing to the safety of residents, the beautification of living environments, and improved well-being. Notably, it is anticipated to reduce traffic accidents and other criminal activities. Source: AKP Khmer
