Vietnam's Mother Goddess Worship: Discussing its World Heritage Value and Future

The second annual forum on Vietnam's 'Mother Goddess Worship' (Tín ngưỡng thờ Mẫu Tam phủ) was held in Hanoi on September 12. The forum aimed to reaffirm the value of this worship, inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016, and discuss challenges for its preservation and development in contemporary society under the theme 'Vietnamese Identity in the Essence of Global Culture'. The forum brought together scientists, experts, managers, as well as practitioners, artists, and community representatives from various localities. The discussions were structured around three in-depth scientific sessions focusing on re-evaluating the values of 'Mother Goddess Worship' and addressing practical questions about how the heritage is recognized, protected, and continues to hold value in contemporary life. Within the framework of the forum, the Institute for Research on Religion and Beliefs announced the launch of its Scientific Council, comprising scientists, experts, and managers, to enhance the quality of the institute's scientific activities. Furthermore, 31 outstanding individuals were honored for their contributions to the practice, preservation, transmission, and promotion of the cultural values of 'Mother Goddess Worship'. This recognized the crucial role of the community as the direct custodians and transmitters of this heritage across generations. An exhibition of photographs and documents related to the practice of 'Mother Goddess Worship' was also held during the forum, attracting significant attention from participants. It showcased the unique aspects of practice spaces, rituals, costumes, music, and cultural values associated with the heritage through numerous artistic photographs. The organizing committee expressed its hope that the forum would generate scientific arguments and recommendations to support research, management, preservation, and promotion of the heritage. They also aim to strengthen connections between management agencies, the scientific community, and practicing communities, thereby contributing to affirming Vietnam's cultural identity amidst global cultural integration and exchange.
