Prabowo, FBI discuss return of smuggled Indonesian artifacts

Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto held a meeting with U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Deputy Director Christopher A. Patel to discuss the return of Indonesian cultural artifacts that have been smuggled into the United States. The meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the protection of cultural heritage. Minister Prabowo expressed concerns over the illicit transfer of Indonesian cultural heritage abroad and sought the FBI's assistance. Deputy Director Patel outlined the FBI's efforts in combating the smuggling of cultural artifacts and indicated a positive stance towards cooperation with Indonesia. He particularly emphasized the importance of information sharing and investigative cooperation against the recent increasing trend of illicit trafficking in cultural goods. Indonesia, a nation with a rich history and diverse culture, possesses numerous ancient sites and artifacts. However, looting and smuggling targeting these treasures remain a persistent issue. Many of these cultural assets are not only national heritage but also hold significant value as world heritage. This meeting is expected to lead not only to the repatriation of cultural artifacts but also to the establishment of a cooperative framework for preventing future outflows of cultural heritage.
