Lai Chau Floods: Deputy PM Pledges Swift Rebuilding After Deadly Disaster

Flash floods and landslides in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau have killed six residents, with two others still missing and 10 injured. Police and military forces have been mobilized to evacuate residents from dangerous areas and support recovery efforts following devastating flash floods in Muong Than commune. According to the latest report from the provincial People's Committee, as of 3:30 p.m. on July 17, the disasters had left one person dead, two injured, while five others remained missing. The death toll has since risen to six. Total economic losses were estimated at about 255 billion VND (nearly 9.7 million USD), with Lai Chau accounting for the largest share of the damage with 190 billion VND, followed by Son La with 46.04 billion VND, Lao Cai with 16.7 billion VND, and Dien Bien with 2.3 billion VND. Government officials have pledged swift support for the rebuilding of affected areas and the stabilization of residents' lives. In Vietnam's one-party system, rapid initial responses and central government directives and support are emphasized during disaster events. While Vietnam continues to experience economic growth, the risk of natural disasters in its northern mountainous regions remains high, highlighting the need for infrastructure development and enhanced disaster prevention measures.
