SC Issues Writs to Protect Rights Advocates
The Philippine Supreme Court has issued writs of amparo and habeas data for four rights advocates in Negros Island, who alleged being "red-tagged" by military and law enforcement. A temporary protection order also prohibits respondents from approaching within one kilometer of the petitioners.
THE Supreme Court (SC) issued writs of amparo and habeas data for four rights advocates who alleged that military and law enforcement officers red-tagged them because of their human rights and agrarian reform work on Negros Island. The court issued a temporary protection order barring Lieutenant General Antonio G. Nafarrete and other respondents from coming within one kilometer of the petitioners and their immediate families. The Court of Appeals was directed to conduct a summary hearing and determine whether the petitioners are entitled to the writs’ full protections. — Mark Joseph M. Sanchez
