Klatham Removed from Opposition Bloc Amidst Shifting Alliances

The People's-led opposition bloc in Thailand has officially decided to remove the Klatham party from its ranks. This decision was primarily driven by the Klatham party's unpredictable stance, including casting a 'yea' vote in favor of the government's proposed legislation on the 2027 budget, as confirmed by People's MP and chief opposition whip Parit Wacharasindhu on September 22. The Klatham party will be formally cut off from the opposition bloc tomorrow, September 23. The defection of the Klatham party has fueled speculation that they will soon join the Bhumjaithai party-led coalition government. It is also speculated that individuals close to Klatham leader Thammanat Prompao may have altered their earlier testimonies during an Election Commission investigation into alleged senatorial election rigging, which helped exonerate key Bhumjaithai figures from prosecution. Klatham spokesperson Attakorn Sirilatthayakorn indicated that the party would have no trouble being removed from the opposition bloc and suggested that joining the Bhumjaithai-led government coalition is a matter of time. This political realignment would add Klatham's 58 MPs to the existing coalition, which comprises 192 Bhumjaithai MPs, 74 Pheu Thai MPs, and dozens from smaller parties.
