Vietnam Shows Strong Air Connectivity Improvement in Asia

Vietnam's key airports are demonstrating notable progress in improving air connectivity within the Asia-Pacific region, according to the 2026 edition of the Air Connectivity Index released by Airports Council International (ACI). The index assesses direct, indirect, and hub connectivity for 315 airports, factoring in the economic weight of destinations and the quality of connections. Stefano Baronci, Director General of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, emphasized the crucial need to strengthen connectivity as passenger volumes in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East are projected to reach 11 billion over the next three decades, enabling the aviation sector to offer greater choice to passengers and deliver wider economic benefits. While specific Vietnamese airports are not directly named in the report, the example of Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Southeast Asia's largest by land area, which offers over 36,000 possible connections to 151 destinations and handled 36.7 million passengers in the first seven months of the year, highlights the region's potential. This suggests Vietnam's strategic geographic position and its capacity to contribute to regional economic growth through expanded air networks. Under its one-party system, Vietnam prioritizes economic growth and strengthening international ties as key national strategies. The development of air infrastructure is crucial for boosting trade, tourism, and investment, thereby accelerating economic expansion. In particular, as Vietnam seeks economic independence and diversification amidst a complex relationship with China, enhancing air connectivity is seen as a vital component. Strengthening its role as a hub within the rapidly growing Asian market is expected to elevate Vietnam's international standing.
