Cambodia Tells US It Won't Recognize Border Changes by Force

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth reiterated Cambodia's stance on the border dispute with Thailand during a meeting with Aleksandra Zittle, Chargé d'affaires ad interim of the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia, held in Phnom Penh on August 4, 2026. Vissoth emphasized that Cambodia consistently adheres to a peaceful resolution of border issues with Thailand, based on international law and existing bilateral agreements. He unequivocally stated that Cambodia will absolutely not recognize any border changes made through the use of force. Through Ms. Zittle, Deputy Prime Minister Vissoth also expressed gratitude for the United States' support and efforts in facilitating ceasefires and encouraging the involved parties to continue observing them. Cambodia has consistently declared its position to protect the Cambodia-Thailand international border, inherited from the Indochina-Siam Border Commission. This stance respects international legal principles, the principle of immutable borders, the French-Siam Convention, treaties, maps resulting from the demarcation work of the Indochina-Siam Border Demarcation Commission, as well as various agreements and documents that both parties have previously agreed upon, aiming to resolve border disputes peacefully and achieve lasting peace between the two countries. During the meeting with the US diplomat, Deputy Prime Minister Vissoth also raised the issue of online scams. He highlighted the Cambodian government's commitment to combating and eradicating online scams from Cambodia without compromise.
