NEC: International Observers Crucial for 2027 Election Transparency

PHNOM PENH, Aug 7, 2026 (KPT) – International election observers will play a vital role in ensuring transparency, fairness and public confidence in Cambodia’s 2027 general election, the National Election Committee (NEC) said Thursday. Spokesman Hang Puthea told KPT English the NEC expected a large international observer presence during both the voter registration exercise and the general election, describing independent monitoring as an essential safeguard. “The presence of international observers is very important for Cambodia’s election process. It helps demonstrate transparency and fairness to the Cambodian public and the international community,” Puthea said. He said thousands of observers were expected, though registration had not yet opened. The NEC is currently handling political party registration and will announce accreditation procedures for observers later. Briefing sessions will be held to explain electoral procedures and ensure observers understand their roles before monitoring begins. Puthea stressed observers must act independently and impartially. “Observers do not have the authority to file election complaints, but they can monitor the process and issue reports based on their observations,” he said. Their participation, he added, would strengthen public trust and boost confidence among political parties and the wider international community. The NEC has announced nationwide voter registration and verification from Oct 1 to Nov 30 ahead of the June 6, 2027 general election. Eligible citizens not yet registered will be able to enrol, while existing voters can update details and biometric data. Officials will also remove names of those who have died, lost voting rights or moved residence, subject to documentation. Last week, the NEC said Cambodian and foreign journalists covering the registration process must obtain official accreditation issued by the election body.
