US Business Community Eager to Invest in Thailand, Meets with Prime Minister
The US business community has expressed keen interest in expanding investment and trade with Thailand, holding discussions with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Thailand's position as an ASEAN hub and gateway to a market of 700 million people was highlighted, alongside progress in investment promotion and trade agreements.
The U.S.-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce hosted a meeting with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to explore investment and trade opportunities in Thailand. The gathering included executives from leading U.S. companies, many of whom are scheduled to attend the upcoming World Bank-IMF meetings in Bangkok next month. During the session, Prime Minister Charnvirakul emphasized Thailand's strategic position at the center of ASEAN, serving not just as a market of 70 million people but as a gateway to the broader 700 million-strong ASEAN region. He highlighted Thailand's efforts to navigate evolving international political dynamics and trade protectionism, noting ongoing trade agreement negotiations with various countries and economic blocs, including the final stages with the United States. Thailand has been actively streamlining its business processes through the "Thailand Fast Pass" system. In the first half of the year, investment promotion applications reached approximately $44 billion, a 37% increase year-on-year. The Prime Minister reiterated the goal of positioning Thailand among the world's top 20 most competitive economies by 2030. Prime Minister Charnvirakul affirmed Thailand's readiness to be a reliable investment destination and partner for U.S. businesses, fostering shared investment, job creation, and prosperity. Brian McFeeters, President & CEO of the USABC, described Thailand as a long-standing and important strategic partner and market for the U.S., expressing the business community's commitment to collaborating with the Thai government on new trade and investment ventures. Michael DeSombre, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, pointed to significant potential for expanded U.S.-Thai cooperation in investment, particularly in areas like Superintelligence (SI) technology, which can be applied across sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, finance, agriculture, education, and public services, creating opportunities for mutual growth.
