Lawyer Hotman Paris Apologizes to President Prabowo Over Corruption Case Remarks

Prominent lawyer Hotman Paris has apologized to President Prabowo Subianto, Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, and the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri. The apology comes after Paris mentioned President Prabowo's name while defending his client, former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie Adriansyah, who is a suspect in a corruption and money laundering case. In his personal Instagram account, Paris stated that his remarks during a press conference at the Attorney General's Office on July 17, 2026, were made purely from a legal advocacy perspective and without any political motivation or involvement. He emphasized that his role as a lawyer is to protect his client within the bounds of the law. Paris had previously claimed that Adriansyah was a figure President Prabowo was proud of for his dedication to eradicating corruption. He stated that Adriansyah had successfully recovered Rp130 trillion in state losses, plus Rp300 trillion from the PKH Task Force, totaling Rp430 trillion returned to the state. "Imagine, someone who is the pride of the President is suddenly criminalized without informing the President," Paris had said, expressing his distress over his client's situation. Meanwhile, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi asserted that the government fully entrusts the case to the legal process and requested that it not be associated with the President. "I think there's no need for presidential permission just because the examination is still in progress," Hadi said after a meeting at Commission V of the House of Representatives on Monday (20/7). He reiterated that law enforcement agencies do not need presidential approval to process legal cases and that the government wants the Febrie case to be processed according to the law.
