Four Arrested Near Cambodia-Thailand Border for Illegal Crossing and Drug Use

In Poipet City, Banteay Meanchey Province, northwestern Cambodia, four individuals, including two who tested positive for drug use, have been arrested by the military police for attempting to illegally cross into Thailand. The incident occurred around 6:30 PM on September 19, 2026, near the Cambodia-Thailand border, following information received from local residents. Initially, the military police detained three workers intending to cross illegally and later released them after counseling and contract signing. However, on the morning of September 20, during further investigation, officers went to the residence of the alleged facilitator, Sim Vasna (42, male). The suspect's family resisted and obstructed the officers, giving Sim Vasna an opportunity to escape by jumping into the border river. Subsequently, a total of four individuals were arrested. The arrested suspects are: 1. Thuy Saran (66, male) 2. Sim Rasmey (26, female) 3. Sim Da (38, male) 4. Dy Vannaro (18, male) These individuals face charges of "conspiracy to facilitate illegal border crossing" and "resistance against public officials." Urine tests conducted by the authorities revealed positive results for drug use in Sim Da and Dy Vannaro. Thuy Saran was later deemed less involved in the offense based on further investigation and was released under the prosecutor's instructions. The case files for the remaining three suspects have been compiled and forwarded from the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Military Police Command to the Provincial Court for legal proceedings. This incident highlights the vulnerabilities in border control between Cambodia and Thailand and the ongoing challenges in combating cross-border crimes such as human trafficking and drug smuggling. The issue of illegal migrant workers, often driven by economic hardship, remains a long-standing concern for the region.
