Myanmar-Laos sign joint MoU on Mekong hydropower project

It is known that during the state visit of the Chairman of the State Administration Council, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, to Laos, a Joint Memorandum of Understanding on Feasibility Study for the Implementation of Hydropower Projects along the Mekong River on the Myanmar-Laos border was signed in Vientiane on July 4, based on the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Electricity Sector between Myanmar and Laos. At the signing ceremony, the Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Laos stated that this project is an important symbol of friendship between Myanmar and Laos, and is a project that will benefit not only the border areas of Myanmar and Laos but also the entire Greater Mekong Subregion, and that the Lao government will provide the best support and guidance for the rapid implementation of the project. Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, U Aye Kyaw, stated that the Joint Memorandum of Understanding signed today is a particularly important project for the friendship and cooperation between the two countries, and that upon completion of this project, it will be able to meet the electricity demand in the region, and therefore, the Myanmar government will also provide the utmost supervision and guidance for the success of the project. Following this, in the presence of the deputy ministers of both countries, the Joint Memorandum of Understanding on Feasibility Study for the Implementation of Hydropower Projects along the Mekong River on the Myanmar-Laos border was signed and exchanged between Primus Sapphire Power Company Limited, appointed by Myanmar, and Phongsupthavy Group Sole Company Limited, appointed by Laos. It is known that this hydropower project has an estimated installed capacity of up to 2790 megawatts, and the companies of both countries will cooperate to complete the feasibility study work within 34 months.
