Hanoi Integrates Public Transit Ticketing System

Hanoi City has officially launched an integrated electronic ticketing system between its urban rail (metro) and buses, marking a significant step towards enhancing public transportation convenience. This initiative allows passengers to use a single ticket to connect between multiple modes of transport. Furthermore, a new monthly pass combining urban rail and the TNGo public bicycle service has been introduced. According to Hanoi Metro One Member Limited Liability Company (Hanoi Metro), starting September 1st, the multimodal electronic ticketing system will be available on urban rail lines 2A (Cat Linh - Ha Dong) and 3.1 (Nhon - Cau Giay), as well as the entire network of subsidized buses within the city. Passengers can access this integrated ticketing system through either a physical transport card with a chip or a virtual card integrated within the "Thẻ vé giao thông HN" mobile application. The integrated ticketing system includes daily, weekly, monthly, and free passes, applicable across the entire subsidized bus network and both urban rail lines. Notably, the multimodal integrated monthly pass offers a 40% discount compared to the total cost of purchasing individual tickets for each mode. The preferential pass is priced at VND 250,000 per month, while the general pass costs VND 500,000 per month. For passengers who do not use smartphones, registering for a physical chip-enabled card can be done via the electronic ticketing website. The card will be delivered directly to the registered address within approximately 3-5 working days. In addition to the metro and bus integration, Hanoi Metro is also deploying a combined monthly pass for metro and TNGo public bicycles within the Hanoi Metro application. This allows passengers to purchase and use both metro and public bicycle services simultaneously on the same app. TNGo bicycle stations are located at the Cat Linh, La Thanh, Lang, Thuong Dinh, Van Khe, and Cau Giay stations, facilitating connections from the station to the beginning or end of the journey. The combined metro-TNGo monthly pass is discounted by 15% compared to purchasing separate monthly passes for each service, equivalent to VND 50,000 per month. Specifically, the preferential multimodal metro-TNGo combined monthly pass is priced at VND 340,000 per month, and the general multimodal metro-TNGo combined monthly pass is VND 430,000 per month. Hanoi Metro states that the integration of metro, buses, and public bicycles provides passengers with more options for connecting the start and end points of their journeys. The development of a synchronized and flexible transportation ecosystem is expected not only to shorten travel times but also to be a crucial condition for promoting the habit of reducing personal vehicle use and shifting to public transportation. The implementation of this multimodal ticketing integration is considered a significant advancement in the digital transformation roadmap of the capital's transportation sector. This policy not only offers passengers flexible transit options and cost savings but also contributes to the goal of developing green and sustainable urban transportation. According to Hanoi Metro data, by the end of April, the two urban rail lines operating in the city had transported over 62.2 million passengers through more than 493,000 train services, ensuring absolute safety during operation. By 2026, Hanoi Metro aims to serve nearly 21.6 million passengers, with projected total revenue of nearly VND 1,280 billion and post-tax profit of nearly VND 46 billion.
