Cambodia Strengthens Environmental Policy at Sub-National Level to Enhance Expertise
A workshop was held in Kampong Thom province, co-organized by the Ministry of Environment and the provincial administration, aimed at disseminating environmental policies and strengthening capacity at the sub-national level. This initiative is expected to enhance the role of local administrations in natural resource protection and climate change response.
A workshop on disseminating policies and strategies related to the environment at the sub-national level was inaugurated on July 16, 2026, at the Kampong Thom Provincial Department of Environment. The event was co-chaired by H.E. Pak Sokharavuth, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Environment, and Mr. Chea Vanchann, Deputy Governor of Kampong Thom Province. The workshop saw the participation of numerous technical officials, heads and deputy heads of provincial departments and units, youth from Sassayak, and other relevant stakeholders. During the occasion, Mr. Chea Vanchann extended a warm welcome to all distinguished guests attending the workshop on the land of Kampong Thom Province. He further stated that this workshop serves as a mechanism for transferring functions and resources from the national to the sub-national level through the enhancement of knowledge and capacity building. When human resources and capital are available at the local level, the capacity to implement national policies and strengthen work execution more effectively can be achieved. H.E. Pak Sokharavuth highlighted the importance of disseminating environmental policies and strategies to increase understanding, strengthen capacity, and promote the more effective implementation of environmental work at the sub-national level, in line with the government's policies and direction. His Excellency emphasized that sub-national administrations play a crucial role in participating in the protection, conservation, and management of natural resources, waste management, reduction of environmental pollution, and response to climate change. Therefore, effective understanding and implementation of related policies and strategies are essential for achieving sustainable development. H.E. Pak Sokharavuth, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Environment, expressed his expectation that the workshop will contribute to strengthening the capacity of sub-national officials, enhancing cooperation among relevant institutions, and promoting the more effective implementation of environmental policies and strategies, with the aim of environmental protection and sustainable development.
