Cambodia Seeks Diversification Beyond China Dependence

Cambodia is actively promoting the diversification of its investment sources and trade partners to correct its over-reliance on China and achieve sustainable growth. This strategy aims to mitigate risks and strengthen its economic foundation, considering the increasing influence of China in recent economic development. While Cambodia has heavily depended on foreign direct investment (FDI) and infrastructure development aid from China, this has also been viewed as a factor increasing economic vulnerability. In recent years, considering the rising global geopolitical tensions and the inherent risks of fluctuations in China's own economy, Cambodia has begun to shift its focus towards strengthening economic ties with ASEAN member states, Japan, South Korea, and even Western countries. Specifically, the nation aims to expand intra-regional trade and restructure supply chains by leveraging the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) framework. Furthermore, to attract investment from Japan and Western nations, efforts are being made to improve the investment climate and enhance the transparency of legal systems. Through these measures, Cambodia seeks to reduce its dependence on any single country and build a more robust and stable economic structure. This diversification strategy is considered essential for Cambodia's long-term economic independence and for enhancing its presence in the international community. However, building new partnerships while maintaining the long-standing economic relationship with China will require careful and strategic diplomatic maneuvering.
