Vietnam Launches Historical Film 'The Sound Across the Ocean,' Promoting New Distribution for State-Produced Cinema
Vietnam has premiered the historical film 'The Sound Across the Ocean,' depicting the struggles of revolutionary soldiers imprisoned in Con Dao Prison from 1945-1954. This film marks the first release under a new government decree aimed at promoting the distribution of state-produced films for political missions.
On the evening of July 16, at the National Cinema Center in Hanoi, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam Cinema Department, and the National Cinema Center, in coordination with VTC Media, held a premiere for the historical film 'The Sound Across the Ocean' (Thanh âm vượt đại dương). This cinematic work, commissioned by the state, focuses on the revolutionary war theme and reconstructs the resilient struggle of revolutionary soldiers imprisoned in Con Dao Prison during the period 1945-1954. Beyond commemorating the 79th anniversary of War Heroes and Fallen Soldiers' Day (July 27), 'The Sound Across the Ocean' also marks the initial implementation of Government Decree No. 189/2026/ND-CP on the issuance and dissemination of films serving political tasks, which took effect on July 15, 2026. The film, directed by Dao Duy Phuc and Nguyen Manh Ha, is based on a script by screenwriter Dao Thuy Trang, which was researched and completed over 10 years. Inspired by the steadfast political prisoners of Con Dao Prison, the work portrays their arduous struggle, rich in willpower, resilience, and faith in the nation's independence and freedom. Production took place from November 2024 to January 2025, with many scenes filmed directly at the Con Dao Prison historical site, once known as 'hell on earth' and a symbol of patriotism and the indomitable spirit of revolutionary soldiers across generations. Produced by Phuong Dong Film Studio, the film has a duration of 116 minutes and is classified for audiences aged 13 and above. Speaking at the premiere, Director General of the Vietnam Cinema Department, Dang Tran Cuong, stated that 'The Sound Across the Ocean' is the first film to be released since the effectiveness of Decree No. 189/2026/ND-CP. He explained that the decree aims to encourage organizations and individuals to participate in distributing state-owned film works, helping to bring films serving political tasks closer to the public through the cinema system. Mr. Dang Tran Cuong added that there are currently 15 distribution units nationwide with over 200 cinema complexes. All distribution units have registered to participate in disseminating the film, with over 190 cinema complexes expected to screen the work nationwide starting July 24. This is considered a notable shift in expanding the distribution scope for state-commissioned films, facilitating public access to works of historical, cultural, and traditional educational value. Sharing at the event, director Dao Duy Phuc expressed the crew's greatest hope that the film reaches a wide audience.
