Vietnam to Begin North-South High-Speed Railway Construction Next Year

The Vietnamese government has decided to commence construction of the North-South high-speed railway, a key national infrastructure project, in 2025. This ambitious project plans a route of approximately 1,541 kilometers, starting from Ngoc Hoi station in the capital Hanoi, passing through 15 cities and provinces, and ending at Thu Thiem station in Ho Chi Minh City, the country's largest economic hub. With a designed top speed of 350 kilometers per hour, the railway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from the current approximately 17 hours to about 5.5 hours upon completion. This holds the potential to dramatically enhance the efficiency of logistics and passenger movement within Vietnam, further accelerating economic growth. The total investment for the project is estimated at approximately $67.34 billion (over 10 trillion Japanese Yen), a scale far exceeding Vietnam's national budget. Securing this enormous funding will likely be the biggest challenge in advancing the project. The Vietnamese government plans to attract domestic and international investment, making collaboration with international financial institutions and infrastructure development companies essential. Under its one-party system, Vietnam is advancing long-term national development plans, and this high-speed railway project is positioned as part of that strategy. Amidst recent remarkable economic growth, infrastructure development is considered indispensable for strengthening national competitiveness. In particular, strengthening domestic infrastructure to promote economic autonomy and development is a crucial policy issue, especially given Vietnam's complex relationship with China.
