Myanmar President to Pay Official Visit to Vietnam, Focusing on Economic Cooperation

The President of Myanmar and his spouse are scheduled to pay an official visit to Vietnam. This visit aims to strengthen economic, trade, and investment cooperation between the two countries. Both nations have agreed to convene the 11th meeting of the Joint Trade Sub-Committee soon, with the objective of promptly addressing difficulties and working towards their target of increasing bilateral trade to US$1 billion. Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung stated that Vietnam, as the ASEAN Chair in 2026, is ready to work closely with other member states to support Myanmar's economic recovery, address social issues, and combat transnational crimes. This initiative aims to promote bilateral and subregional cooperation for the sake of peace, stability, and sustainable development in Myanmar and the region, as well as for the building of the ASEAN Community. Furthermore, the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has proposed a joint anti-drug campaign from June to September 2026, involving the public security ministries of China and Laos, and the Ministry of Home Affairs of Myanmar. This initiative reflects not only operational cooperation but also a strong political commitment to addressing global drug crime and drug abuse. Following four decades of Doi Moi (Renewal), Vietnam has achieved significant economic advancements, becoming a dynamic economy with a GDP of US$514 billion in 2025, an economic growth rate of 8.02%, total trade turnover of US$930 billion, and registered foreign direct investment (FDI) exceeding US$38.4 billion. This visit by the Myanmar President is expected to reaffirm Vietnam's role in promoting peace, stability, and economic cooperation within the ASEAN region. Vietnam consistently plays a constructive role in addressing regional challenges, and this visit is understood to be an extension of that commitment.
