Philippines Chosen for US-led Pax Silica Initiative Amid Regional Interest
Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez revealed that several Asian nations were interested in the US-led "Pax Silica" initiative, but the Philippines was among the few selected. The project, aimed at bolstering AI and semiconductor supply chains, faces domestic debate regarding its economic benefits versus environmental and social impacts.
Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez revealed that several Asian nations were prepared to undertake the US-led "Pax Silica" initiative, but the Philippines was among the few countries selected. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Manila Overseas Press Club Judiciary Night in Makati, Romualdez stated, "Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia – they were prepared to take on the Pax Silica." He emphasized that the Philippines is one of the select few nations chosen for this economic security framework. Romualdez urged the public to consider the advantages of the initiative. "Let's not look at the negatives right away. Let's look at the positives, then discuss the negatives," he advised. He also expressed hope for thorough discussions on potential environmental impacts and other concerns, stating, "I think these will be thoroughly discussed, threshed out, and it will be very transparent." He called on political leaders and opposition groups to "look first at the advantages of Pax Silica before going any further in criticizing it." "Pax Silica" is a US-led initiative and economic security framework aimed at creating a global supply chain for the AI and semiconductor industries. The Philippines is one of the 24 country signatories. As part of the project, a 1,600-hectare, AI-focused industrial hub is being considered for New Clark City in Tarlac. The government maintains that the initiative will not only foster AI hubs but also strengthen high-value manufacturing in the Philippines. Information Source: GMA Money Philippines
