Thai Government Promotes Khon Kaen University's Next-Gen Battery 'KKUVOLT' for Industrialization

The Thai government is actively promoting the practical application of domestic research and innovation. A key initiative involves supporting the industrialization of 'KKUVOLT', a battery technology developed by Khon Kaen University (KKU) over more than a decade. This effort is part of the government's strategy to foster the growth of Thailand's energy sector and cultivate future talent. KKUVOLT from Khon Kaen University has been expanded into a diverse product line, including INR 18650 battery cells, mini power banks, batteries for electric motorcycles and golf carts, and custom batteries for solar cell systems and specialized equipment. In recent years, the technology has also been applied to energy storage systems (BESS), offering wall-mounted, mobile, and expandable solutions suitable for households, small businesses, and high-demand energy systems. In particular, the Solar & BESS solutions for homes are expected to contribute to reducing electricity bills, stabilizing energy supply, and promoting the use of clean energy. Furthermore, KKUVOLT is focusing on the development of sodium-ion batteries, also known as 'salt batteries.' These have the potential to offer new technological options for energy storage systems and electric vehicles, thereby reducing reliance on foreign technologies. In response to these advancements, Professor Dr. Yotsanan Wongsawat, Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), visited Khon Kaen University's battery and new energy factory. He reviewed the progress of technological development and discussed strategies for strengthening collaboration with the private sector, with the government intending to enhance support for quickly bringing university research to market. Alongside technological development, Khon Kaen University is also dedicated to nurturing specialized personnel to support the future energy industry by establishing new departments focused on batteries and new energy.
