Vietnam Celebrates 81st National Day, Highlighting 'Brotherly' Ties with Laos

On the occasion of the 81st National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, a strong emphasis was placed on the enduring 'brotherly' relationship and mutual support between Vietnam and the Lao People's Democratic Republic. This year marks 81 years since the historic moment on September 2, 1945, when President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and guided by the principle that "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom," the Vietnamese people have successfully achieved national liberation and reunification. They have steadfastly overcome numerous difficulties to defend the Fatherland, safeguard national independence and freedom, and build and develop the country, while actively contributing to regional and global peace, stability, cooperation, and development. Notably, since the initiation of the "Doi Moi" (Renewal) process in 1986, Vietnam's economy has maintained a relatively high growth rate, averaging around 7% per year. The country's per capita income, which was less than US$100 in 1986, surpassed US$5,000 by 2025, with the economy ranking 32nd globally. Total trade turnover has exceeded US$930 billion, placing Vietnam among the world's top 20 trading economies, and foreign direct investment continues to show an upward trend. In early 2026, the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam was convened, setting long-term national development goals, including becoming a developing country with modern industry and upper-middle-income status by 2030, and a developed, high-income country by 2045. In terms of foreign affairs, Vietnam consistently pursues a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation, and development, acting as a trusted partner in the international community. Recent achievements include re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (2026–2028) and hosting APEC in 2027, further enhancing its presence on the global stage. Vietnam deeply recognizes that its current achievements are the result not only of the will, resilience, and sacrifices of the Vietnamese people but also of the solidarity, support, and valuable assistance from friends worldwide, particularly from the "brotherly" Party, State, and people of Laos. The support provided by the Lao people during the Vietnam War and the sacrifices of Vietnamese soldiers for Lao independence are never forgotten. This spirit of sharing hardships and standing together as comrades and brothers has been passed down through generations. It is acknowledged that every achievement of Vietnam today bears the valuable contribution of the Lao people, and every step forward in Laos's development is also supported by Vietnam.
