Thailand Grapples with Massive Food Waste, Urging Systemic Reuse Solutions

Thailand is grappling with a significant food waste problem, with individuals generating an average of 154 kilograms of food waste annually. In 2024 alone, the country produced over 10.1 million tons of food waste, accounting for nearly one-third of all municipal waste nationwide. Much of this discarded food could still be used to feed people, animals, or even generate energy. However, the current system makes reuse difficult, posing a systemic challenge. This issue represents not just a waste management problem but also a considerable economic loss, as valuable food resources are squandered, leading to increased production costs and resource inefficiency. The Thai government and relevant bodies are under pressure to expedite the development of more effective reuse systems beyond simple waste reduction. The reduction and effective utilization of food waste are increasingly recognized as critical issues for achieving a sustainable society and economy in Thailand.
