Cambodia to Enhance Border Cooperation with Vietnam and Laos to Boost Trade
Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen called for enhanced border cooperation with Vietnam and Laos during a meeting in Ratanakiri province, aiming to further boost economic and trade ties among the three nations. He also outlined plans for Ratanakiri to become Cambodia's fourth economic hub.
On July 8, 2026, Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen addressed 785 local administrative officials in Ratanakiri province, including members of provincial, municipal, district, commune, and village councils, as well as heads of various departments. The meeting was held in Banlung city. According to HE Chea Thireth, a spokesperson for Samdech Techo, Hun Sen expressed his pleasure at returning to meet with the leadership and officials in Ratanakiri province again. He praised and highly valued the efforts of the provincial leadership, civil servants, and local working groups. Samdech Techo stated that the northeastern provinces will become Cambodia's fourth major economic hub, focusing on the agro-industry and mineral resources sectors. This fourth economic hub will contribute to economic growth and help achieve Cambodia's vision of becoming a high-income country by 2050. Samdech Techo reminded all civil servants, especially commune and village council members, to continue diligently fulfilling their duties to serve the nation and its people. He urged them to pay particular attention to providing necessary and essential services to the citizens quickly, efficiently, and effectively. Samdech Techo also encouraged and supported the strengthening of tax and customs collection efficiency, along with strict measures to prevent tax evasion or undeclared business activities, in order to increase national revenue. Samdech Techo also reminded all officials to continue maintaining national stability and paying attention to preserving security and social order. He urged the continued implementation of the "safe village-commune" policy, including cracking down on various offenses such as snatch theft, robbery, drug trafficking, and technological crimes. Samdech Techo also stated that authorities at all levels should continue to pay attention to former soldiers and retirees, as they have made significant contributions to the nation's development. Therefore, they should be cared for through visits and the organization of various programs to prevent them from feeling isolated. On this occasion, Samdech also reminded and advised authorities at all levels and relevant institutions to pay high attention to the well-being and living conditions of fallen soldiers, disabled veterans, and their families. Samdech Techo emphasized that the management and care for former soldiers must be thorough, and their children should be encouraged to receive higher education and become intellectuals to repay their immense contributions to the nation and homeland. Samdech also advised authorities to pay attention to resolving land disputes for citizens quickly and effectively, especially through out-of-court settlements, without leaning towards any party. Samdech Techo also appealed to authorities at all levels to strengthen the protection, conservation, and prevention of all natural resource offenses. Samdech Techo reminded all officials to focus on grassroots work, avoid causing dissatisfaction among the people, and remember that officials are not the masters of the people. Samdech Techo also urged the authorities of Ratanakiri province to increase border cooperation with Vietnam and Laos, which share borders with Cambodia.
