DOH Allocates 425 Beds for Leptospirosis in Metro Manila Amid Monsoon Rains

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) announced yesterday that 425 beds in public hospitals across Metro Manila have been allocated for leptospirosis patients, in anticipation of a surge in cases driven by the ongoing monsoon rains. Currently, 287 leptospirosis patients are admitted in various public hospitals in the capital region, leaving 138 beds vacant and available for new admissions. This preparedness measure comes as continuous monsoon rains are expected to increase the risk of leptospirosis transmission. San Lazaro Hospital has recorded the highest number of admissions with 97 patients, comprising 76 adults and 21 children. East Avenue Medical Center follows with 54 admissions, while Quirino Memorial Medical Center has 24. Tondo Medical Center reported 22 admissions, and the National Kidney and Transplant Institute has 18. The DOH also confirmed the availability of 127 hemodialysis machines. As of August 29, a total of 6,253 leptospirosis cases have been recorded nationwide by the DOH. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease transmitted through contact with water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected rodents, with infection risks escalating during the rainy season due to increased flooding and puddles. This proactive measure highlights the government's commitment to public health, especially during periods of heightened disease risk.
