Cambodia: Riverbank Erosion Worsens, Mitigation Meeting Held

In Cambodia's central Kampong Cham province, the damage caused by riverbank erosion is escalating. On September 22, 2026, the provincial administration convened a meeting to assess the impact of natural disasters from riverbank collapses and to seek mitigation measures. The meeting was presided over by Mr. Chan Ran, Deputy Governor of Kampong Cham Province, with the participation of provincial administration leaders, deputy district governors, and relevant line ministries and agencies. Mr. Chan Ran stated that the meeting aimed to examine and evaluate the causes of river, stream, and canal bank collapses, assess their impacts, and identify appropriate measures to prevent and reduce the risks of further erosion. He instructed relevant ministries and agencies to continue cooperating with local authorities in communes and districts, especially those affected by bank collapses. They are to inspect the actual situation on the ground and prepare an urgent report, ensuring accurate, clear, and comprehensive data collection. This report will be submitted to His Excellency Un Channda, Governor of Kampong Cham Province, for review and to request intervention from relevant ministries, institutions, and expert agencies to implement measures preventing future bank collapses. According to a report from the Kampong Cham Department of Water Resources and Meteorology, the total length of riverbank erosion in the province has reached approximately 12,963 meters. This includes 259 meters in Stueng Trang district, 4,600 meters in Kampong Siem district, 104 meters in Kampong Cham city, 88 meters in Kang Meas district, 350 meters in Koh Sotin district, and 7,562 meters in Srey Santhor district.
