ASEAN Observers Investigate Thai Military Attack on Cambodia's Koh Yor

An ASEAN observer mission has conducted an on-site investigation into the alleged damage in the Koh Yor area of Koh Kong province, reportedly caused by Thai military shelling. According to the Cambodian Ministry of National Defense, around 10:15 AM on September 1, 2026, 76.2mm artillery shells fired from a Thai naval warship struck the Koh Yor area in Pak Khlong village, Pak Khlong commune, Mondul Sema district, Koh Kong province, causing extensive damage to residents' homes, property, and civilian infrastructure. The investigation was led by the head of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT KH HOM) from the Republic of the Philippines. The Cambodian government stated that the mission aims to provide the ASEAN observers with a comprehensive and firsthand understanding of the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border. It also underscores the Cambodian government's consistent stance of prioritizing peaceful resolution of border issues through discussions and bilateral mechanisms, in accordance with international law, existing bilateral agreements, and the mandate of the Joint Border Commission (JBC). The Cambodian government and the Ministry of National Defense reaffirmed their firm, sincere, and resolute commitment to fully and strictly abide by the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on December 27, 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Cambodia-Thailand Peace Agreement on October 26, 2025, and other related agreements, in order to achieve rapid improvement and a return to long-term peace and stability.
