Thai-EU FTA Negotiations Nearing Conclusion, Boosting Export Markets and Investment
Negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Thailand and the European Union (EU) are nearing conclusion, with 15 out of 24 chapters already agreed upon. This pact aims to expand Thailand's export markets, attract EU investment, and enhance long-term competitiveness.
The Thai government is actively pushing forward negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU). Recently, an agreement has been reached on 15 out of the total 24 chapters, representing nearly two-thirds of the entire negotiation. Both sides are now accelerating discussions on the remaining key issues with the aim of expanding export markets, attracting investment, and enhancing Thailand's long-term competitiveness. The Thai-EU FTA negotiation aims to establish a high-standard trade agreement that covers a wide range of areas, including trade in goods, trade in services, investment, government procurement, intellectual property, and sustainable development. This is expected to boost the economic potential of both parties and create new opportunities for businesses on both sides. Currently, crucial areas such as market access for goods, sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures, rules of origin, trade in services, investment, and government procurement are being rapidly negotiated to reach a mutual agreement as soon as possible. The European Union is a significant trading partner for Thailand and a market with high purchasing power. The establishment of an FTA is expected to reduce trade barriers and increase export opportunities for Thai products, particularly in agriculture, food, automotive, industrial parts, and electrical appliances. It will also help attract investment from Europe, build confidence among entrepreneurs, and improve Thailand's competitiveness compared to rival countries that already have FTAs with the EU. "The government is fully committed to negotiating the Thai-EU FTA to open up new opportunities for Thai entrepreneurs, expand export markets, attract investment, and achieve long-term economic growth. This is being pursued with consideration for protecting the country's and its people's interests in all dimensions, enabling Thailand to compete robustly in the global economy," stated the Deputy Government Spokesperson. The government plans to continue pushing forward these negotiations to ensure the swift completion of the Thai-EU FTA. The agreement is intended to serve as a key mechanism for enhancing the country's competitiveness, creating new trade and investment opportunities for Thai businesses, and driving sustainable economic growth for Thailand.
