Vietnam's Deputy Health Minister Prosecuted for Bribery

Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health in Vietnam, has been prosecuted, arrested, and detained on charges of accepting large bribes. This action is drawing attention as part of the government's broader anti-corruption campaign within the healthcare sector. The Economic Police Department of the Ministry of Public Security issued a decision on September 2 to prosecute Mr. Thuan as a defendant, along with an order for his detention and search of his residence. The department is currently investigating a case of "Violation of accounting regulations causing serious consequences and Smuggling" that occurred at Viet My Medical Investment Joint Stock Company and related entities and localities. Based on the expanded investigation, the Economic Police Department supplemented the decision to prosecute the case and simultaneously issued a decision to prosecute Mr. Thuan for "Bribery," as stipulated in Clause 4, Article 354 of the Penal Code, along with arrest, detention, and search warrants. He is alleged to have accepted a large sum of money as a bribe. Following approval by the Supreme People's Procuracy, the Economic Police Department proceeded to execute the prosecution decision and legal orders against Mr. Thuan in accordance with legal regulations. The Economic Police Department is currently focusing on thoroughly investigating the scale, roles, and criminal acts of the defendants and involved parties to clarify the nature of the case and fully recover state assets. This case further highlights the strong stance of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the government against corruption. In recent years, Vietnam has seen a series of corruption investigations targeting politicians and high-ranking officials, reflecting an ongoing effort to maintain public trust and achieve a fair society.
