The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Tokyo, in collaboration with the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, hosted the "Indonesia-Japan Transportation and Infrastructure Business Forum and Business Matching 2026." During this event, Indonesia presented 32 strategic investment projects in the transportation and infrastructure sectors, with an indicative value of IDR 207.64 trillion (approximately US$13.16 billion). The forum, held from August 27-28, 2026, at the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, aimed to bring Indonesian project owners face-to-face with Japanese investors, business actors, financing institutions, and strategic partners to foster more concrete investment cooperation. Deputy Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Japan, Maria Renata Hutagalung, highlighted the nearly seven-decade-long partnership between Indonesia and Japan, noting that its tangible results are visible in infrastructure such as the Jakarta MRT and Patimban Port. She emphasized that Japanese investment in Indonesia is distinguished not only by its value but also by the quality of engineering, discipline in project completion, technology transfer, expertise imparted to Indonesian workers, and a willingness for long-term partnership. The 32 strategic projects offered by nine Indonesian State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and Regional-Owned Enterprises (ROEs) include roads and toll roads (12 projects), property and residential area development (10 projects), railways and Transit-Oriented Development/TOD (6 projects), ports and logistics (2 projects), and steel fabrication facilities (2 projects). Three-quarters of these are brownfield projects, involving existing assets, expansion plans, divestments, and asset recycling opportunities, with operational and income records readily available. Flexible cooperation schemes, including divestment, joint ventures, concessions, and long-term leases, are being offered. The Indonesian government also outlined its support for Japanese partners, such as risk sharing through guarantees from PT PII and long-term financing from PT SMI, integrated permit processing via Online Single Submission with the Ministry of Investment/BKPM, tax holiday and allowance facilities, and labor skill development through vocational education and super deduction facilities for training costs. The forum saw participation from 50 representatives of 36 Japanese companies and institutions, including major players like Toyota Tsusho, Sumitomo Corporation, Obayashi, Shimizu Corporation, Penta-Ocean, Tokyu Corporation, JR East, Tokyo Metro, Mitsubishi Electric, Urban Renaissance Agency, Mizuho Bank, SMBC, JOIN, JICA, and JETRO, indicating strong Japanese interest. This event marks a significant step in strengthening economic ties and cooperation in infrastructure development between the two nations.
