Cambodia Promotes Public Access to Khmer Rouge Tribunal Resource Centre - Press Club President Highlights

Mr. Puy Kea, President of the Cambodian Press Club, emphasized that the Resource Centre of the Khmer Rouge tribunal (ECCC) provides sufficient resources for the public to study the history of the Khmer Rouge era. Mr. Kea noted that while films depicting the Khmer Rouge period, such as 'The Killing Fields' and 'First They Killed My Father', capture public interest, those seeking deeper understanding often visit sites like Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Choeung Ek (the Killing Fields). However, he stated that the ECCC's Resource Centre, located in the heart of Phnom Penh, is the most suitable place to learn about the detailed records and evidence of the Khmer Rouge regime. During a study tour on September 2, 2026, accompanied by representatives from over 20 media organizations, Mr. Kea said that the centre offers ample materials for national and international citizens, especially students, to learn about the history of the Khmer Rouge. These materials have been specially organized by the ECCC. The Resource Centre was established as part of the ECCC's 'residual functions'. Its primary mission is to collect, preserve, and manage all documents, evidence, and legal records related to the trials of senior Khmer Rouge leaders. It also promotes understanding and education by disseminating knowledge on law, history, and memory to the public, students, and researchers through exhibitions, a library, and outreach programs. Furthermore, this effort aims to contribute to preventing the recurrence of genocidal regimes by educating about justice and human rights, thereby deterring future violence. Mr. Thong Socheat, Secretary of State of the Council of Ministers and senior official of the Khmer Rouge tribunal, also attended and highlighted the importance of disseminating information about the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge era to both national and international audiences. He mentioned that the Resource Centre itself is making efforts through various means to enable the public to study in detail at the centre, in addition to visiting sites like Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek.
