One Dead in Drum Explosion During Welding in Phu Tho, Investigation Launched

A tragic accident occurred in Phu Tho province, Vietnam, when a metal drum exploded during welding operations, resulting in the death of one worker. Local police have initiated an investigation into the 47-year-old suspect, Le Hong Quan, for negligent homicide. The incident took place on June 10, shortly after 1 PM. Quan and a colleague had purchased eight 200-liter metal drums from a scrap dealer to be used as flotation devices in a pond near Quan's home. While welding the fourth drum, Quan failed to conduct a proper safety check, leading to the ignition of residual flammable vapors inside. The welding sparks caused the vapors to combust, resulting in a powerful explosion. The blast caused Quan to suffer ear injuries and torn clothing, and he was also pinned by falling debris. His colleague sustained severe head injuries and later succumbed to his wounds. Police investigations revealed that the victim died from traumatic brain injury. The explosion was attributed to the ignition of solvent vapors, likely from Isopropyl Alcohol, which had been stored in the drum. The combustion in the sealed container led to a sudden and drastic pressure increase. Authorities have classified Quan's fault as "negligence due to carelessness." While the outcome was unintentional, the suspect used a heat source capable of generating sparks in a confined space, potentially containing flammable vapors, without implementing necessary safety precautions. Quan has reportedly compensated the victim's family with VND 100 million (approximately $4,000 USD). Following this incident, the police are urging the public to thoroughly inspect containers and eliminate any potential ignition risks before undertaking welding or cutting work, especially when dealing with materials that may have contained flammable substances.
