3.6 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Homes in Cao Bang
A 3.6 magnitude earthquake struck Cao Bang province in northern Vietnam on the evening of July 30. The epicenter was near the Chinese border at a depth of approximately 10 km. Residents felt their homes shake and briefly evacuated outdoors. Fortunately, no casualties or significant damage have been reported. The area is situated within an active geological fault zone.
A 3.6 magnitude earthquake struck Bao Lac district, Cao Bang province, in northern Vietnam at approximately 7:45 PM on July 30. The epicenter was located about 10 km below the surface, near the Vietnam-China border, and roughly 210 km from Hanoi. The tremor caused multiple houses to shake in Bao Lac, leading residents to briefly evacuate outdoors. Triệu Thương, a resident of Bao Lac near the epicenter, described the experience: "While inside my stilt house, I felt the floor shake for about 2-3 seconds. Wooden furniture rattled, and my whole family was scared and ran outside." Some residents in Tuyen Quang province, adjacent to Cao Bang, also reported feeling the tremor at the same time. The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) is continuing to monitor the situation and has assessed the natural disaster risk level as 0. No casualties or structural damage have been reported. Bao Lac district lies within the Song Gam fault zone, one of the active geological fault lines in the northeastern region. Geological studies indicate that this area frequently experiences small to moderate earthquakes, which typically do not cause significant damage. However, tremors strong enough for residents to feel can still cause alarm. While Vietnam is not situated on the boundary of major tectonic plates, it has several active fault zones, including Song Gam, Song Hong, Song La, and Lai Chau-Dien Bien. Earthquakes recorded within the country are predominantly small to moderate in magnitude, rarely causing severe damage.
