Vietnam Shortens Visa-Free Stays for 60 Countries Amid Security Concerns

Vietnam's government has decided to shorten the visa-free stay period from 60 to 30 days for visitors from 60 countries and territories, including Singapore, China, the U.S., and 27 EU member states. This move is part of the government's efforts to curb crime involving foreign nationals. The reduction applies to 60 countries and territories and was announced on Tuesday by the consular affairs department of the Thai foreign ministry. The decision comes after a series of recent arrests of foreigners accused of drug offenses, sex trafficking, and operating businesses such as hotels and schools without proper permits. Meanwhile, visitors from Peru, Brazil, and South Korea will be granted 90-day visa-free stays, up from 60 previously. A government spokeswoman told AFP in May that stays could be extended once at the discretion of an immigration officer, when the Cabinet approved the measure. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said that month that the plan to trim visa-free visits was part of a crackdown on individuals abusing the visa system by committing crimes in the country. Thailand, Southeast Asia's second most visited country after Malaysia, has attracted 20.9 million foreign tourists since the beginning of the year, down 3% on the same period in 2025, according to the latest official figures. The policy adjustment highlights Vietnam's ongoing efforts to balance economic growth driven by tourism with national security concerns. The impact on tourism, particularly from key markets like China, will be closely watched.
