In the Pakokku red onion market, prices have risen further by the end of the third week of July due to high buyer demand and low supply, reaching over 5,000 kyats per viss, it has been learned. In the early part of July, the price was 4,000 kyats, and in the middle of the month, it was 4,500 kyats, but by July 20, red onions reached 5,200 kyats per viss. A red onion trader from Pakokku city said, "As much as there are buyers, the supply is low. On some days, only less than 10,000 viss are supplied. Those who hoard are also selling because they are getting good prices. Exceeding 5,000 kyats per viss has never happened in previous years. This year, all red onion cultivation areas have reduced yields, so the supply is low, and buyers are paying higher prices, causing the prices to rise." On July 20, when over 20,000 viss of red onions were supplied to the Pakokku onion market, the market price for John Swe (small size) was 3,300-3,800 kyats per viss, for John Lat (medium size) it was 3,900-4,600 kyats per viss, and for John Gyi (large size) it was 4,700-5,200 kyats per viss, it has been learned. In the past year, 2025, red onions were traded at only 1,500 kyats per viss, and at the beginning of this season, they were traded at around 1,600 kyats per viss, it has been learned.
