Preah Vihear Temple Suffers Severe Damage in UNESCO Report, UN Body Warns of 'Imminent Danger'

A joint mission by UNESCO and ICOMOS has released an official report detailing severe damage to Cambodia's Preah Vihear Temple, caused by armed conflicts in 2025. The report states that the temple's integrity, authenticity, and Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) have been compromised. The mission, which surveyed the site from March 1 to 6, 2026, recorded 142 damaged areas from the July 2025 conflict and 420 damaged areas from the December 2025 conflict. The report describes the scale of destruction from the recent conflict as "incomparable" to previous damages, emphasizing that "no area was spared" from the impact. Beyond the temple structures themselves, infrastructure and tourism facilities also sustained damage. More alarmingly, UNESCO-ICOMOS has assessed that Preah Vihear Temple is under "serious and specific danger" and "requires urgent and significant conservation operations."
